Antwerp
- The Jerusalem of Northern Europe.
The
Flemish city of Antwerp is home to one of Europe's most important
Jewish orthodox communities. Expelled from Portugal in the sixteenth
century, Antwerp's earliest Jewish families worked extensively
in the city's renowned diamond trade. In the mid-1800s, the city
saw a large influx of Eastern European Jews, especially from Poland,
seeking a better life. After the Second World War, the Jewish
quarter developed in the vicinity of the Centraal Station (easy
escape being an ever-present preoccupation) and the Diamond Exchange,
which continues to be controlled by several Jewish families.
